It allows everything from bench-scale experiments to scaling up in an industrially relevant environment, equipped with bioreactors ranging from 60 mL to 350 L, chemical reactors, solid-liquid separation systems, biomass pretreatment equipment, and sensors for process monitoring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the main focuses of DEB is fermentation processes, which include precision fermentations \u2014 aimed at the production of proteins, enzymes, organic acids, and other bioproducts. Development can be carried out in isolation or in an integrated manner for both the bioconversion (e.g., propagation, fermentation, enzymatic reactions) and downstream (e.g., cell separation, purification, concentration, and drying) stages, adapting according to the product of interest, which can be biofuels, biochemicals, proteins, and polysaccharides, among others. DEB&#8217;s infrastructure also allows the development of physical-chemical and biochemical processes, such as biomass pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, and technical-economic and sustainability assessment, with generation of critical data and kinetic modeling.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Equipment available to justify;\">This research used facilities of the Brazilian Biorenewables National Laboratory (LNBR), part of the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), a private non-profit organization under the supervision of the Brazilian Ministry for Science, Technology, and Innovations (MCTI). In addition, it develops biochemical pathways, including process design, from bench to pilot plant scale-up, culminating in techno-economic and sustainability assessments of biotechnological processes and biobased products. Bioprocess is one of the pillars of biotechnology, since it brings together microorganisms, enzymes and nutrients for the production of bioactive compounds of industrial interest and products of renewable origin. A bioprocess can be characterized by five phases: the preparation of raw materials, their conversion into fermentable sugars, the fermentation process, purification, and the suitability of the higher value-added product for its application. LNBR&#8217;s expertise in various types of bioprocesses makes it unique in the handling of microorganisms and enzymatic processes up to pilot scale.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main features of the Bioprocess Development and Scale-up facility are:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Handling and conditioning of a wide range of biomasses and pretreatment development, with different equipment and purposes;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Integration, validation and evaluation of processes involving multiple technologies and different types of equipment in a modular structure;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Data acquisition and automated process control with analytical capabilities aiming at high quality results;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reduction of risks, costs and time in the scale-up of bioprocesses established at laboratory scale (proof of concept).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This facility is unique in Brazil for its flexibility and modularity on a semi-industrial scale. It has automated bioreactors with several sensors for monitoring processes at bench and pilot scale, including processes with genetically modified microorganisms.
