A maior parte da produ\u00e7\u00e3o ocorre na regi\u00e3o centro-sul do Brasil, a qual representa mais de 90% da produ\u00e7\u00e3o nacional.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A biomassa da cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar vem sendo historicamente utilizada no Brasil para a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de a\u00e7\u00facar e etanol, produtos que s\u00e3o derivados do caldo extra\u00eddo do colmo da cultura. Entretanto, como est\u00e1 evidenciado na <strong>Figura 1<\/strong>, o caldo representa apenas pouco mais de um ter\u00e7o do potencial energ\u00e9tico da cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar. Adaptado de UNICA 2013<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">O baga\u00e7o \u00e9 um res\u00edduo lignocelul\u00f3sico resultante da extra\u00e7\u00e3o do caldo da cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar para a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de etanol e a\u00e7\u00facar. O Brasil apresenta um potencial de produ\u00e7\u00e3o de 162 milh\u00f5es de toneladas de baga\u00e7o, sendo que a regi\u00e3o centro-sul \u00e9 respons\u00e1vel por 92% da produ\u00e7\u00e3o nacional. O baga\u00e7o \u00e9 principalmente utilizado para a cogera\u00e7\u00e3o de eletricidade. Atualmente, a eletricidade produzida a partir do baga\u00e7o (e da palha em menor quantidade) \u00e9 uma das principais fontes de eletricidade no Brasil e representa uma importante receita para o setor sucroenerg\u00e9tico nacional.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nas \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas o setor sucroenerg\u00e9tico passou por grandes transforma\u00e7\u00f5es devido \u00e0 proibi\u00e7\u00e3o do uso pr\u00e9vio de fogo antes da colheita e ao advento da colheita mecanizada. Atualmente, a colheita mecanizada sem queima \u00e9 adotada em cerca de 92% da \u00e1rea de cultivo no Brasil e 97% da \u00e1rea cultivada na regi\u00e3o Centro-Sul (Conab, 2019). Consequentemente, quantidades significativas de palha da cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar (8 a 20 t ha<sup>-1<\/sup>) passaram a ser mantidas no campo, especialmente no Centro-Sul (Menandro et al., 2017). Na regi\u00e3o Norte-Nordeste, a \u00e1rea colhida com queima pr\u00e9via ainda corresponde a 75% da \u00e1rea cultivada.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A palha recobrindo o solo passou a suportar m\u00faltiplos servi\u00e7os ecossist\u00eamicos no sistema solo-planta, resultando em diversos benef\u00edcios agron\u00f4micos e ambientais (Carvalho et al., 2017), tais como: contribui\u00e7\u00e3o para o ac\u00famulo de carbono (Tenelli et al., 2019), ciclagem de nutrientes (Cherubin et al., 2019), manuten\u00e7\u00e3o da umidade (Corr\u00eaa et al., 2019), redu\u00e7\u00e3o da compacta\u00e7\u00e3o (Castioni et al., 2019), redu\u00e7\u00e3o das perdas por eros\u00e3o (Valim et al., 2016) e aumento da atividade biol\u00f3gica (Menandro et al., 2019). Na planta, a palha passou a interferir diretamente na brota\u00e7\u00e3o, crescimento e produtividade da cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar (Carvalho et al., 2019), e na incid\u00eancia de pragas nos canaviais (Castro et al., 2019).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mais recentemente, o setor sucroenerg\u00e9tico, ap\u00f3s verificar o potencial desta biomassa como mat\u00e9ria-prima, iniciou o recolhimento de parte da palha para a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de energia el\u00e9trica renov\u00e1vel. Com este objetivo, nos \u00faltimos anos o Laborat\u00f3rio Nacional de Biorrenov\u00e1veis (LNBR\/CNPEM) conduziu o Projeto <strong>Sugarcane Renewable Electricity (SUCRE-PNUD)<\/strong> que visou avaliar, dentre outros indicadores, o potencial da palha de cana-de-a\u00e7\u00facar como mat\u00e9ria prima para a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de bioenergia e os impactos da remo\u00e7\u00e3o deste res\u00edduo no sistema solo-planta-atmosfera.
