Candidates can apply until July 31st; the selected fellowship holder will work in person in Campinas (SP), on the CNPEM campus
The Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), with support from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), offers a postdoctoral fellowship in lignin processing, in the context of the project “Pyrolysis of residual lignin to obtain bio-binders and biochars for use in transport infrastructure”. The project will be carried out in person at the Brazilian Biorenewables National Laboratory (LNBR), which is part of the CNPEM.
The fellowship, which will last 24 months, is linked to the thematic project “Decarbonization of transport for the benefit of society: enhancing sustainability with the integration of biochemical and thermal routes in the integral use of biomassa” (23/09789-8).
Description of activities
The selected fellowship holder will work on obtaining lignin from the enzymatic hydrolysis of pre-treated sugarcane bagasse aiming to explore experimental conditions for pyrolysis of residual lignins for bio-binders and biochars production, as well as understanding how variations in processing conditions to obtain bio-binders and biochars impact their characteristics and their potential application in transport infrastructure.
Candidate Requirements
Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree and a PhD in chemical engineering, chemistry or related fields. Candidates must have completed their doctorate no more than seven years ago.
Candidates are expected to have proven experience in plant biomass processing and characterization, pyrolytic processes, as well as mastery of statistical analysis tools and methodologies. Advanced English is mandatory for this position.
Registration instructions
Applications must include: (i) cover letter, detailing previous experience and motivation; (ii) complete documented CV, with links to the Lattes CV and other academic profiles; (iii) curriculum summary in the FAPESP model; and (iv) indication of two professionals to send recommendation letters.
Applications should be sent to the email address george.rocha@lnbr.cnpem.br, with the subject: “FAPESP Postdoctoral Fellowship”.
Deadlines
Applications must be submitted by July 31, 2025. Exclusively at the address george.rocha@lnbr.cnpem.br.
Fellowship details
The FAPESP fellowship offers a monthly remuneration of R$ 12,000.00, plus a technical reserve equivalent to 10% of the grant annual value (https://fapesp.br/en/postdoc). Candidates can submit questions to george.rocha@lnbr.cnpem.br.
About CNPEM
The Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) is home to a state-of-the-art, multi-user and multidisciplinary scientific environment and works on different fronts within the Brazilian National System for Science, Technology and Innovation. A social organization overseen by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), CNPEM is driven by research that impacts the areas of health, energy, renewable materials, and sustainability. It is responsible for Sirius, the largest assembly of scientific equipment constructed in the country, and is currently constructing Project Orion, a laboratory complex for advanced pathogen research. Highly specialized science and engineering teams, sophisticated infrastructure open to the scientific community, strategic lines of investigation, innovative projects involving the productive sector, and training for researchers and students are the pillars of this institution that is unique in Brazil and able to serve as a bridge between knowledge and innovation. CNPEM’s research and development activities are carried out through its four National Laboratories: Synchrotron Light (LNLS), Biosciences (LNBio), Nanotechnology (LNNano), Biorenewables (LNBR), as well as its Technology Unit (DAT) and the Ilum School of Science — an undergraduate program in Science and Technology supported by the Ministry of Education (MEC).
