Bioprocesses

The Bioprocesses Facility uses the techniques of cultivation and characterization of microorganisms (fungi, bacteria, and yeasts), enzymatic hydrolysis, and alcoholic fermentation aiming the biomasses transformation into biochemicals, enzymes, bioproducts, and biomaterials. This facility covers the initial stage of the biotechnological processes escalation and plays a key role in leveraging routes and processes to scale in pilot plants, a field of action of great attractiveness within partnerships to support innovation.

Main skills and experimental techniques:

  • Microorganisms cultivation and characterization (fungus, bacteria, and yeasts);
  • Enzymatic hydrolysis to produce biofuels and other products from renewable sources;
  • Studies of escalation and production of biomolecules.

Unique infrastructure with automated bioreactors (60ml to 20l) and sensors such as viscometer, gas analyzer, MIR, microscopes, among others, for monitoring bench-scale processes. Support equipment for microbial propagation and biomolecule analysis (incubators, greenhouses, biological safety cabins, electrophoresis, spectrophotometers, centrifuges). Classified as Biosafety Level 1 (NB-1) area, it cultivates wild and genetically modified fungi, bacteria, and yeasts.

Start of operation: in 2012 and 2015 for external users.
